COVID-19 has meant a significant increase in people working from home. We understand that during these challenging times, stress levels are already through the roof, so we’ve broken down five key ways to ease stress when working from home.

For those of us who are now working from home, juggling family, children, and work can only add to that stress.

In April 2020, statistics released by the UK’s Office for National Statistics showed that 49.2% of adults in employment were working from home, as a result of the social distancing measures introduced in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

It’s not all doom and gloom though as a report conducted by Finder found that 65% of workers said they would be more productive in a home office than a normal office and 75% of workers say they will be more productive due to reduced distractions.

With working from home being a trend that seems like it’s only going to get bigger, we wanted to look at five ways to reduce stress for you and your family while you are working from home and potentially homeschooling too!

Five Ways to Ease Stress While Working from Home

1. Keep in Touch When Working from Home

Communicate as much as possible with people outside of your home environment.

Whether that’s weekly conference calls with your work colleagues, catching up with your manager each day, or just sending a quick “I miss you” message to your work friends.

Keeping the lines of communication open with your work while you are working from home will make a massive difference to your mood.

As they say, a problem shared is a problem halved.

2. Home Schooling: Remember You Are Not a Trained Teacher!

Trying to concentrate on work with kids running around is a daunting enough task.

Add to that your worries that your child is missing out on important education, its no wonder you’re stressed.

Try to find interesting and entertaining tasks that your child can do on their own so that you can focus on your work.

3. Ask for Help When You Need it

Whether you are struggling emotionally, with your workload when other colleagues have been furloughed, or are ill, ask for help where you can.

Your colleagues and family will want to support you as much as possible.

If you are an employer, have you thought about providing additional support to your employees?

Outsourcing some of their workloads to a virtual assistant service or allowing your team to divert their calls to a call answering service for a few hours a day could really help to ease the pressure.

4. Avoid Too Much News and Social Media

Limit the amount of time you spend watching or reading the news, it’s unlikely to change much during the day so try to limit yourself to only watching the news once a day.

Catching up on the doom and gloom multiple times a day will only distract you from work and heighten your stress levels.

5. Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

Everyone deals with stress differently.

This does not mean that your thoughts, feelings, or reactions are wrong; you’re unique and so are your responses.

Engage in healthy activities that you enjoy and find relaxing.

Keep to your regular routines and keep things in perspective.
